A.van Ouwater The raising of Lazarus

The image of the medieval Jews on the frontpage of the booklet  is a detail from a painting by Aelbert van Ouwater,  showing a scene from the Gospel according to John. It shows Lazarus rising from the grave. The image of Jews in biblical scenes was quite common, but not per se after reality. There may be iconographic influences. So it is not sure that the Jews of Utrecht and elsewhere in the Netherlands looked like this, but it is not impossible.

Although the representation of the Jews is not offensive, they are placed in a negative context that sets them apart. On one side of the image are the followers of Jesus, believing and observing in devotion the wonder that takes place. Directly opposite are the Jews, holding their noses in disgust because of the odor from the grave. They are set apart as unbelievers. In that respect the painting contributed to the image of the Jew as the ‘Other’ and to the mood in which Jews were expelled or even worse.
